The sixth international conference for the ALA will be hosted by Umeå University, Sweden, 1–3 July 2002.

Plenary speakers:
Professor Nick Ellis, University of Bangor, Great Britain
Professor Claire Kramsch, University of Berkeley, USA

The ALA supports and promotes activities across the whole breadth of Language Awareness. It defines Language Awareness as explicit knowledge about language, and conscious perception and sensitivity in language learning, language teaching and language use. Activities are conducted in different areas of Language Awareness, e.g. mother tongue learning, foreign language learning, teacher education, language use in professional settings, and in the community, at a variety of levels across the lifespan (e.g. primary, secondary and tertiary education, professional training and practice, community education programmes).

Conference fees
Conference fees include registration kit, regular sessions, 3 lunches, 2 dinners and coffee breaks. All sums are given in Swedish crowns (SEK) and Pounds sterling (GBP). Accommodation, see below.

Accommodation
Choice of accommodation in one of four categories where rooms have been prebooked has to be specified on the registration form. After 15 May 2002 we cannot guarantee that the chosen category is available. Please note that payment for accommodation should be made direct to the hotel/youth hostel before departure.

The first alternative – the youth hostel – does not provide en suite toilet and washing facilities. The modern camping cottages, situated approximately two km away from campus, are ideal for those who want to bring their family and prefer self-service. They are fitted with toilet, shower, TV and kitchenette.

Breakfast is included in the prices for the youth hostel and the hotels.

Alternatives: per night

1. youth hostel, single room 200 SEK/14 GBP

2. campus hotel, single room 450 SEK/30 GBP

3. city centre hotel, single room 900 SEK/60 GBP

city centre hotel, in double room 550 SEK/37 GBP

4. camping cottage, 1–4 persons 600 SEK/40 GBP

We would advise participants to arrive on the Saturday before the conference, i.e. on 29 June. This allows for cheaper air tickets as well as the opportunity to take part in an excursion on Sunday, 30 June.

Excursion
The Sunday afternoon excursion includes visits to some exotic spots in the surroundings of Umeå as well as an opportunity to experience the long hours of day light, the ”white Nordic nights”.
Price: 225 SEK/15 GBP including informal dinner.

Registration and payment
The registration form can either be downloaded from this website or sent to you by mail upon request.
Participants residing in the Nordic countries will receive an invoice.
Participants not residing in a Nordic country are kindly asked to transfer the amount for the conference and excursion direct to the ALA. All payments in sterling and all Visa/Mastercard payments to Richard Aplin, University of Leicester School of Education, 21 University Road, Leicester, LE1 7RF. Visa/Mastercard payments will be calculated in sterling.
Please note that due to organisational constraints, we will not be able to make a complete refund if you cancel after 15 May 2002.
